From Plant to Medicine, Part 3 ~ Simmering and Syrups

“Be like the honey bee, anything it eats is clean, anything it drops is sweet, and the branch it sits upon does not break.” ~ Imam Ali (a.s)

Simmered herbal essences
Simmering is a perfect method for making medicine from hart roots, fruits, barks and seeds. It also smells very good and while you prepare medicines you also fill the house with wonderful healing scents.

Fill three table spoons of dried plant product into a sauce pan and add 1-2 cups of water. Bring to boil, reduce heat and let simmer for 20-45 minutes. Fill the water into a jar. Simmer leavy plants such as thyme only for 10 minutes.

I like to recite Dhikrs (99 names of Allah, Tasbeeh of Fatimah) when I make medicine or I simply say “Bis’millah”.

Treat barks, seeds, fruits, herbs as just described under simmering. Take the boiled essence and instead of filling it into a jar, give into seperate pot and keep on simmering, and add generous amounts of good quality honey. Gently continue to simmer until all honey is disolved.

This is a wonderful method to make your own halal cough syrup (add for example some Thyme).

In sterile, dry bottles
Syrups can be kept in the fridge for up to 6 months (honey acts as the preservative)
